Most of my recent posts had mentioned how busy I've been but none of them really said what I've been busy with... Well, I've been busy with a whole myriad of things but I've decided to post a few pictures of some of the objects that I encounter everyday at work and talk a little bit about them while I am at it... LOL (^__^") ... This post is sort of an excuse to post something on the family blog by the way, since it seems to have gone stale...

I'll try to keep this journey short but there are seven pictures to share, so if I do go off on a tangent somewhere - forgive me... (^___^") Also, do forgive me for that fact that I'm not trying to maintain any real lingual or logical flow in this post...! Well, here we go! (^___^)

Busyness is Our Business

One of the first few things that I regularly check when I get to the office are my course syllabuses. Thankfully, courses at this university only have one lecture a week although, not-so-thankfully, that also means that the lectures can get really, really long...

Nonetheless, I need to check on the syllabuses because there are also quite a large number of courses that I cannot officially register for because of my position. Consequently, that means that I don't get correspondence from professors because I'm mainly "sitting in" for those courses.

Understandably, the picture seems to suggest a light load of courses but I assure you, there are more syllabuses on the other side of the desk... (^___^")

Keys to My Digital Life...

Something which I stare at a lot more, apart from course syllabuses, is my keyboard. As a matter of fact, I'm staring at these very keys as I type away at the moment...

But it seems that I have grown too accustomed to my keyboard's Japanese layout and size because whenever I am presented with a full-sized U.S. keyboard now, my typing speed can only be described as "clumsily slow".

It is also because of this acclimatisation to the Japanese keyboard that I've come to the realise that I'll likely have to make my way to Japan if I intend to get a new laptop... Luckily, I probably won't need to make that trip for at least another couple of years since the little fella is still going strong despite its age and the abuse it suffers at my hands... LOL

Padding Up My Mouse

Continuing on with things related to computing, allow me also to introduce my office mouse and its makeshift mouse pad. Yes, it's called the "office mouse" because it stays in the office... which is probably why it's such a nervous wreck...

Before I made the mouse pad, the cursor on my computer would keep wiggling about as if it was suffering from some sort of a spasm attack... Of course, it was probably the desk's glossy surface that made the pointer go wild like that but still... it really seemed like it was suffering from a convulsion or something...

Regardless of this minor weakness, I'll still take an optical mouse over a mechanical one any day... My memories of mechanical mice are dominated by the times I cleaned out their insides only to have them get all dirty and unresponsive again shortly afterwards... (>__<)

Desktop Mobile Defence

But that's not all that I've outfitted my desk with... Indeed, I also needed something I could count on to protect my mobile phone in case I were to step out of the office without it - and there was only one chap that Buttercup and her sister thought was trustworthy enough for that assignment: Panda-Z!

So with that, the charge of guarding my mobile fell onto Panda-Z, the all-powerful panda-like mecha that is commandeered by the super hero robot panda, Pan-Taron (that's the dude behind my phone...). Panda-Z, of course, is a series of short anime clips that investigate everyday life as a robot... LOL. It makes no effort to hide the fact that it is a parody of super-robot animes like Mazinger Z and possesses the charm of never taking itself too seriously...

Anyhow, lodging my phone into the protective body that is Panda-Z's impenetrable armour of some high-tech future material, I feel a certain sense of comfort and security that seems ever-elusive in a city as cut-throat as Hong Kong...

Now, if only I can teach my mute robot pal to take incoming calls too, all will be well with the world... LOL

Putting Name to Face

Although I've been talking about objects around my office, it seems clear that I'm deviating from the subject of work - so, let's move on to discuss one of the things I have to do... Indeed, besides teaching a robot panda to answer calls, part of what I do also requires that I teach human students a thing or two about stuff... (^___^")

In my classes, I want to foster an environment where students come to see themselves as my peers and not just my students. To achieve such an atmosphere though, face recognition and name recall are important since those are the elements that provide a very personal platform for human interaction. Unfortunately, universities can sometimes be really big places and courses usually have a ton of students attending them, so it's no surprise that names and faces could sometimes escape the memory...

Which is why I turned to squiggling all my students as a way to enhance my memory, as you can see from the above picture... LOL (^__^")

The Proud Office Shuttlecock

As you may have gathered, although I claim that there is much work at the office, there is no shortage of things to remind us that some playtime is called for every now and then... (^___^") Indeed, a symbol that reminds us to intermingle play with work is our trusty office shuttlecock.

To be sure, I've never personally seen anyone play with it nor have I touched it - but standing there unused, it serves as a testament that the office has tons of other things to entertain itself with when we are not at our desks chipping away at the never-ending flood of work.

So, standing proudly between desks as a symbol of play, it reminds us that if we were ever to exhaust our methods of procrastination, we can always rely on it as a last resort... (^__^")

Come to think of it, despite all the work that is being done, there is a great sense of play in the office - perhaps a little too much of it. In general though, it's a very warm place to be and it's not as if you can't get anything done there... then again... I can't remember getting anything done there either... LOL

A Monster in My Desk

Finally, because work and play are very active activities, allow me to introduce you to the monster in my desk...

Activity's enemy and the anti-thesis to any sense of consciousness, this monster is summoned by a mixed spell of drowsiness and lethargy. Once summoned, it effectively acts to cushion my head into its soft form thereby fully restoring my strength and consciousness (called HP and MP respectively in role-playing games... Yes, I finally started playing Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII...(^___^))

This is a very important part of work though and no one should deny themselves rest because of work. I know that that sounds paradoxical but let me explain: basically, recent research has suggested that if we were working hard on a problem and were still unable to solve it, it's probably better to take a break and stop worrying about it. The reason why this helps has very much to do with how different brain waves are associated with our different bodily states and the explanation goes a little like this...

Thinking very hard on a problem requires us to draw extensively from the reasoning faculties of our brain, but if we were still unable to solve the problem then our heads have likely hit a mental roadblock. This intense reasoning is associated with brain gamma waves. Now, at this point, if we simply walked away from the problem and took a breather, that would allow our brains to relax and relaxation is associated with alpha waves in the brain. But alpha waves are also linked to the creative processes of the brain, so it is in this more comfortable state that the mind may begin to look at the puzzle from different perspectives and ultimately lead to its unravelling by more novel means...

So perhaps it was no coincidence that it was just when Archimedes was stepping into his bathtub that he figured out the then-insoluble problem of precisely calculating the volume of irregular objects... LOL (^___^")

Well, I really should stop here... I know I said I'll try to keep it short... Obviously, that didn't work out too well... LOL Anyway, next up, I'll be posting a translation post on Hikki's prescription for depression, Fight The Blues \(^ o ^)/ Stay tuned! (^___^)

Lyrics Translation: te wo tsunagou (手をつなごう) ~ ayaka (絢香)

I cried watching the PV, I cried listening to the single, I cried reading the lyrics, and I certainly cried translating this beautiful ballad... But it wasn't because of any heartache that this translation post was delayed, it was more the headache from the flood of work that came in two and a half weeks ago.

Nonetheless, this song still occasionally induces tears because its lyrics are just so touching and meaningful to me. I must say that I do become sentimental quite easily and am very prone to sniffling. Nonetheless, I had mentioned before that I really enjoy ayaka's work because she seems to always capture and express my thoughts, feelings and experiences like no other artist (as in the case of 三日月, for example).

手をつなごう is no different in this respect and triggers my memories of the time when I left home for the great Canadian unknown. The beauty of this song lies not in taking my perspective however, its beauty lies in taking the perspective of those I left. Certainly, it was in understanding these words through my mother's eyes that I truly related to the wealth of emotion crafted into this piece.

It was in taking that view that many lines in the song struck me very hard since they reminded me of the times when I chose to "be strong" as I ventured off. It's no exaggeration to say that I still have certain regrets about the way I conducted myself then in order to convey "strength". I was young and, for lack of a better expression, just plain stupid (that's not to say that I am any smarter now though...). I was silly enough to confuse apathy for strength and, as a result, acted in equally silly ways to display my affection.

Through this translation however, I feel that I could now allow these regrets to transcend the realm of raw emotion. In translating this song, I have found a vehicle to transport the joyless regret from the intangible mechanisms of my heart to the tangible surfaces that my words shape. But in doing so, I do not hope to banish these feelings into a stone prison of writing, rather I hope to preserve them as words set in this tablet of virtual stone.

With this release then, let us move forward to discover the beauty in 手をつなごう - a masterpiece that will continue to help me fight the blues of life.

The PV primarily reflects the message in the song by capturing scenes from the lives of individuals living in the more rural areas of Japan. While adding another dimension to understanding the song, the video also featured a myriad of heart-warming moments that definitely makes it worth checking out.

Theme song:
This song is used as the theme to the movie, 映画ドラえものび太と緑の巨人伝 ("eiga doraemon nobita to midori no kyojinden"; trans: "Movie: Doraemon - Nobita and the Green Giant Legend").

Comments:
手をつなごう is about us facing the future but is written from the perspective of those that surround us. The lyrics actually work on two levels throughout the song: the first level being that of the personal self and the second level being about the people dearest to the self. ayaka sets out to reveal the dual-levelled nature of the song in the first verse by writing "人" in the lyrics but singing "君" in the music. This effectively frames it as a piece about everyone while simultaneously limiting it to be about only one person: you.

The ability to write one thing and read another is a commonly used linguistic trait in the Japanese language that expands on a certain concept by attributing more meanings to it. It should be noted that this usage is usually clarified by the use of furigana, but ayaka tends not to include it... LOL... (^___^") In utilising the language this way, the song becomes very personal as the words shift from a song about people in general to a song about the thoughts of those that are dearest to us. Understandably, we cannot truly know the feelings that others feel for us but, through her writing, ayaka attempts to provide us with this insight by proxy.

Knowing this is only the beginning of grasping the many messages in this song however; because from here, one realises that the lyrics cover a large and varied spectrum of motifs. Unfortunately, going through all the ideas from this piece will stretch this segment to make it unreasonably long. In this way, I intend to only discuss the two concepts that jumped out most at me from the lyrics...

Starting with the first noteworthy notion that is the acknowledgement that being able to hear this song places us among the ones that are "living in a continuing dream". That is to say, no matter how difficult life may seem, we are still living a relative good life that others may consider but a "dream". Indeed, there is another level to this line which is that simply being able to live is itself a dream and that is why although the future may seem frightening, we can still confidently take the step forward.

Indeed, the final blog post of Major Andrew Olmsted, posted posthumously, explicates the meaning of this line in such a vivid and substantive manner that I would recommend its reading to anyone interested. I should make it clear that I mean no offence by linking it from here under this context; it just appeared congruent to relate his post with the topic at hand. His post had moved me to tears and certainly, the world has lost another beautiful mind in his passing... but knowing him from his post, it seems that he will rest well in the simple assurance that life goes on for the world...

Somewhat related to the first theme, the second concept in the song is that of growth, especially the growth of those we love. Certainly, while we often think about how we are growing as individuals, we tend to also somehow assume that things will stay the same for those we are closest to. Many of my friends have commented on how others around them and the world in general has changed after their university years. There are also some that have continued to cling on to their old allegiances in an attempt to fondly remember the days when life was that much simpler.

But as ayaka demonstrates, the reason for change is not that people change; instead, change comes about because everybody grows. In terms of people, "change" is probably an inaccurate term to use because it does not recognise life's progression and implies instead that someone had simply swapped one face for another.

Surely then, people do not go through life "changing", they go through it "growing" and part of that growth is experiencing the evolution of one's life circumstances. Differential experiences inform the way we all grow and this is why by being a part of the lives of those we love, our actions and thoughts have bearings on their actions and thoughts as well. Indeed, throughout this song, ayaka sets out to show that growth is not a personal experience but a shared one instead; and ultimately revealing how we are all intertwined with our communities and why relationships require our constant attention.

In closing, ayaka's powerful and emotional vocalisation of the music and lyrics breathe life into her words as the soothing acoustics convey a comfortable melody that envelops the listener in a warmth that is passed down through the ages. Alas, spring has arrived in the gentle melody emanating from 手をつなごう.

Lyrics Translation: Namidairo ~ YUI

Well, it may seem a little out of character for me to be posting in such quick succession, but I have some time left over and the truth is that translating doesn't actually take up all that much time, LOL. In fact, I usually take more time writing a translation post than translating the piece for the post itself. (^___^") Anyhow, another major reason for this quick post is my excitement to move on to translating ayaka's newest work of art.

I have, of course, updated the post for LOVE & TRUTH to reflect the addition of a YUI acoustic version to the song with this new single. I have to admit that I have had a little bit of difficulty coming to like YUI's Namidairo... LOL. I am more a fan of YUI's rock than of her ballads, but after a few listens, I am really beginning to appreciate Namidairo for what it is.

Nonetheless, as can be expected from YUI, the lyrics are quite literal and there is little room for any real analysis since it's quite clear what she is trying to say. With that then, let us join our hands together and move on to the exceedingly painful ballad that is Namidairo.

Comments:
YUI has always been quite literal in her lyrical composition; so it comes as no surprise that Namidairo is very straightforward. Indeed, she seems to be at her metaphoric peak in the chorus where she likens the colour of her tears to the silence of her voice.

Nonetheless, YUI does make a strong point on the nature of negativity and anger. Through this piece, she showed that such negative feelings can consume a person by causing them to lose sight of the world around them and become solely absorbed in themselves as a method of healing their pain. Indeed, there is a tendency for people to act and feel as though the world owes them something when they are encompassed by such emotions. By pointing this out, YUI demonstrates that we have to go beyond these states and recognise that turning our emotions inward may not be a good solution.

In the end, the song does have a way of growing on you when given a chance and it is because of that that I did, in fact, feel an urge to translate it. Well, that, and the fact that she sings it so well that it's impossible not to feel your heart getting wrenched out while listening to it... LOL (^___^")*
