Lyrics Translation: onna ni sachi are (女に 幸あれ) ~ Morning Musume. (モーニング娘。)
Just a little over two years ago, I would never thought that I would be doing what I am doing now. Indeed, many of my friends who know of my interest in J-pop will be horrified to hear that I have been converted to a Hello! Project fan. Yes... I now follow all things Morning Musume. (better known as momusu) despite the fact that I used to run away from them like they were plague - you have to forgive me though because it's hard to take them seriously, especially after you find out that the full stop at the end of their name is, in fact, a mistake on their registration form... LOL (0___o)
Well, what was it that won me over then? It was certainly nothing to do with their music - since I made a point of avoiding it. But since these girls have their hands in everything, they eventually got to me through football a.k.a. soccer, or more correctly, futsal (indoor football). A friend from Argentina who was a fan sat me down to watch a match of the girls playing in their team, Gatas Brilhantes H.P. and it went so-so... I was obviously unimpressed but admittedly, they didn't butcher the sport I love so much. Still, who in their right mind would take a bunch of singers that sing silly songs (with varying degrees of singing ability) trying to play futsal seriously?
That was pretty much my mentality until three-quarters way into the game and Gatas was fouled with the match tied at 1-1. The foul occurred near the halfway line and it was cute to see the girls get decidedly pissed off with their opposition. The kicker was none other than team captain (and momusu leader), Yoshizawa Hitomi... seriously, I was sure she only got the title of captain because of her status in momusu... Well, the moment she kicked the ball - I realised how very wrong I was. The shot was a brilliant curling drive shot (that is, the ball rises slowly and curls out then at midpoint picks up speed to dive down and curl in) that struck home through the top right corner.
It was a case-in-point affair for my Argentinian friend as my jaw dropped. I am quite sure he knew that was the moment I would be converted because the rest of the match was relatively mundane, but I could already feel my heart melt towards these silly girls... Especially that keeper of theirs (I am a goalkeeper myself, although I am admittedly bad at it! LOL) - Konno Asami. There was nothing cuter than seeing how serious she got defending the goal then, after making an amazing save, sat there flabbergasted and having no idea what happened (from experience, I believe these kinds of saves are called "reflex saves"... LOL)!
It was from that point that I decided to play catch up with momusu specifically and Hello! Project in general. I've been following their antics on an on-and-off basis since, though not their games because they can get quite boring save some moments of inspiration... LOL. Of course, there is another reason why I am translating this as well - it's because Jun Jun and Lin Lin made their debut with this single! Yes, in celebration of their 10th anniversary, momusu took in non-Japanese members into the group for the first time and it's frightening how Jun Jun towers over all the other girls by so much (it's noticeable even in the cover of single).
Nonetheless, it was hard to avoid momusu - their fanbase is so large and so extensive - and once they were on the radar, it was hard not to like them! That is how I began to appreciate and look out for momusu, their music, members and all the rest of it. In many ways, the entire group is a "feel good" group and if you are ever in need of smiles, momusu can help in that! LOL. That being said, this song is a great workout song since the pace is quite nicely set with a distinctive chorus! (now you know what my iPod is playing as I lift those darned weights... (-___-"))
Right then, on to the song itself!
Song information:
Track 1 from momusu's single, 女に 幸あれ (Released 2007/07/25).
PV availability:
Yes, a PV was released with the single. If you ever wondered something along the lines of: "Will a cute girl still be cute if she was pissed off and calling you an idiot?" then you need to watch the PV because it radiates a resounding "YES!" to that rather bizarre question... (o___O")
Theme song:
The song is not used as a theme song.
Alternative versions:
No alternative versions are available for the time being.
Comments:
This song needs little explanation as the message is pretty clear. This is for all you gals out there that have been betrayed by lousy guys who never deserved you in the first place!!!! WOOHOO!!!! (^__^") Well, this is common to most momusu songs - they don't really require much thought to get since they are all pretty darn straightforward. So without further ado - on to the lyrics!

A Toast to Women!

-------------------------------------------------------
A certain sense of loneliness descends on me
In the twilight sunset.
Those words of yours
Still echo in my ears.**
You will see no tears from me
For that is something that no one will ever see,
Save for myself – the self that puts up a strong façade.
How am I to forgive you?
You are a bloody idiot!
An idiot who picked up
Another girl – Why did you do it?
In the end, I was only left with tears.
Certainly, one day
Happiness will come to me.
It is for that day
That I will prepare myself.
That happiness is waiting
Somewhere for me.
Here’s a toast to women!
May you all rise like the morning sun!***
Longing for the city life,
I lived a foolhardy existence.
Your gentleness brought me
An unexpected warmth.
Finding the joy of living every day,****
I grew accustomed to the city
And found myself wrapped in bliss.
I didn’t realise a single thing.
What a fool I must have been to you!
Since when did you get so intimate
With that girl? You...
All you gave me was tears.
I know that one day
Happiness will come my way.
It would be far too unfair
If that was not to be.
It is towards that end
That I will make my way.
Here’s one to a pure heart!
Rise like the morning sun!
I know that happiness
Will come to me one day
And for that day,
I will be ready.
Somewhere out there,
Happiness is waiting for me.
Here’s to women!
May you all climb like the morning sun!
One day, happiness will
Surely come to me.
It just wouldn’t be fair
If that wasn’t the case.
Towards that end,
I will move forward.
Here’s to a pure heart!
Ascend like the morning sun!
Notes:
*Note 1: I am completely perplexed by this – although the lyrics clearly say “純情” (pronounced “junjou”), the girls happily sing “女に”... Sure, only the Chinese girls Lin Lin and Jun Jun sing this part of the song, but surely they would be corrected if it was not intentional. Perhaps, it could really have simply been a reference to the Chinese girls when the song was first written and they changed it in the final version. My theory comes from the fact that the first character of “junjou” is, in fact, Jun Jun’s given name (“jun” means “pure”), LOL.
**Note 2: Literally, “Still remain in my ears”
***Note 3: Literally, “Morning sun, rise”
****Note 4: Literally, “Every day was joyful”
